Standard issue, .8 liter capacity, tooled aluminum construction M31 canteen with a black bakelite cup and leather reinforced, olive drab canvas carrying straps and harness with magnetic sheet metal fittings. The vertically oval, natural aluminum construction canteen is contained in a slightly mottled, brown felt cover with four brass, closure snaps and a vertical, black leather harness and carrying straps. The felt cover has a horizontal leather retaining loop stitched to both the obverse and the reverse and a rivetted on natural aluminum stud to the bottom for securing the carrying strap and harness. The canteen comes complete with a molded black bakelite cup. The elongated oval cup has a rolled back lip to the top edge, a raised, riveted on, strap retaining bracket to the obverse and dual, overlapping, swivel wire handles to the reverse, secured by a horizontal, riveted on, retaining tab. The bottom of the cup is well marked with the embossed DIN, Deutsche Industrie Norm (German Industry Standard), logo and the manufacturers one letter code "S". The web carrying and cup retaining straps have a steel gripper buckle to the obverse and a steel attachment friction clip to the reverse all intact. The gripper buckle has the impressed manufacturers initials "D&O". The cup retaining strap has a crimped on sheet metal tip with the impressed manufacturers name "LUX". The canteen body is clearly stamped with the manufacturers initials and date "HWSD42" indicating unknown manufacturer in 1942. All the components are in overall good condition.
